Q & A with Kelly A.

Inside the Bible Adventure Book of Scavenger Hunts by Kelly White

By Molly / April 20, 2016

This is Kelly’s first book, and it’s just in time for your next outdoor soiree. So without further ado, here is Kelly, in her own words, talking about her latest baby.

G3: Wow! What an amazing idea, what inspired you to write it?

Well, truth is, as with all good things, God inspired me. Really…He lined it up perfectly for me. I was helping my author friend Karen Whiting promote her book Nature Girl to camp stores, so I was poking around on the American Camp Association website, and there it was: “Call for Christian Authors”! I went to the ACA’s online bookstore, perused its titles, and thought, “Hmm, no scavenger hunt books. They should have one!” And so one Saturday I grabbed a notebook, sat down on my couch, and brainstormed a list of ideas for 12 Christian-themed scavenger hunts. I e-mailed my pitch that same day and by Monday—it was Martin Luther King Day—I had a book contract from Healthy Learning in my inbox. I encouraged Karen Whiting to pitch, too, and her Nature Bible Puppet Mania released March 2016 along with my The Bible Adventure Book of Scavenger Hunts.

G3: What do you hope people will take away from it?

The Bible Adventure Book of Scavenger Hunts’ introductory page ends with this very important note: “There’s only one rule that’s set in stone, and it applies to all of this book’s activities: Have fun with it!” So that about wraps it up for the most part—I want people to have a blast! The activities are for all ages, and can be fine-tuned for large or small gatherings, done in any landscape, awesome for birthday parties, family reunions, youth groups. I’d love to see families and friends put their own signature spins on the hunts, and turn them into seasonal traditions. Other than the mandatory fun factor, I hope it encourages readers to look at Bible verses from a fresh angle since I infuse a lot of Scripture as clues.

G3: What is your favorite hunt?

Hmmm … that’s a tough question. I love them all! Some are more involved than others; one that takes some planning and prep is the Hidden Treasure Hunt in Chapter 11. There’s just something so mysteriously intriguing about searching for loot from a treasure map. The game has a pirate theme, so players get to wear bandannas and eye patches (which they have to find first, of course), and then they get to hunt for and gather all the craft supplies needed to make handmade kaleidoscopes at the end.

There are lots of activities in the book, though, that can be done on a whim, that don’t require so much preparation. One of my favorites for some spontaneous fun is Chapter 10: Love Thy Neighbor. I think all writers love to nudge other people to write, and that’s what this activity does—it challenges readers to write their own clues for the other players in the game. Because the game requires hitting up the recycling pile, it also includes some “upcycled” crafting activities. The book includes several craft projects, simple recipes, short scavenger lists, and other activities that can be pulled out of each game’s overall context for quick impromptu activities—the page layouts are deliberately designed for easy photocopying, for handouts.

One thing is for sure, I love that this book is infusing Bible and nature and I cannot wait to do these with my sweet granddaughter, Ellie! I love that Kelly has laid it all out for me so I won’t have to do all that planning.

Where can you get your copy? The Bible Adventure Book of Scavenger Hunts is available for purchase at amazon.com, healthylearning.com, acabookstore.org, and etsy.com/shop/JesusPosters.

This is definitely not the last we’ve heard from Kelly. She’s got many more awesome projects coming out. Next up on her docket, Jesus Groupie. Just how excited is she for Jesus Groupie?

I am sooooooo stoked about Jesus Groupie, my upcoming book project, my opus if you will! It’s very different from The Bible Adventure Book of Scavenger Hunts in that it has an edgy vibe to it, a rock-n-roll theme, a “fanzine” for Jesus. The book cleverly parodies elements of pop culture, reframing the life and teachings of Christ in a format that’s relatable to a 21st-century audience. It’s packed with amazing art, both contemporary and classical, beautifully illustrated. As you know I’ve recently signed with a terrific literary agent, D.J. Snell of Legacy Management, and he’s really excited to line me up with the best publisher for my Jesus Groupie series…so stay tuned.

Congratulations Kelly Ann White! Changing the world by injecting it with your love, you go girl!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I highly recommend this witty, easy-to-follow book for planning scavenger hunts of such fun, I wanted to try each one! Easily adaptable for audiences and ages, each "party" includes detailed instructions, ideas, and activities for planners to pick and choose from. Whether for youth groups, campers, birthdays, classrooms, or impromptu parties year round, this book offers clever hunts all will love, and opportunities to create cherished memories for kids (and adults!). I only wish the book was in four-color, because the creations and recipes throughout look gorgeous!

From publisher:

The Bible Adventure Book of Scavenger Hunts is jam-packed with loads of fun activities created around scripture verses all quoted from the New International Version (NIV).

The book features not only scavenger hunts, but also craft projects, easy recipes, science experiments, and other elements, with each chapter highlighting a specific Bible theme.

The scavenger hunts in this book are terrific for summer camps, youth groups, campground coordinators, homeschooling programs, family gatherings, and even birthday parties.

Most of the activities can be completed with any number of players, and leaders can organize for teams, pairs, or individuals accordingly. Plus, there's something for kids of all ages.

All of the scavenger activities contain other elements, such as fill-in-the-blanks, science projects, and color-by-symbols that can be completed independent of the hunt. Most also include easy-to-photocopy handouts.

The scavenger hunts can be fine-tuned to fit into any schedule or landscape. Detailed instructions and clues are provided.

Another reviewer from Amazon:

What a fun and creative way to get kids outside, moving about, reveling in nature and the beauty of the world around us! I went to a Catholic school, and let me tell you, if my Religion classes had been more like this book, with awesome craft ideas and great ways to get kids to work and talk together, I definitely would have paid more attention ;) While this book is fun, it also presents, in my opinion, the true principles of Christianity (or, really, most religions): love yourself, love others, respect the environment (animals and critters included!) that you're in, and not to be afraid to explore and ask questions because that's really how we learn. BONUS: Yummy recipes that everyone will love!

I may be a bit biased, because I am blessed to call Kelly my good friend and writing partner. I started working with Kelly via Girls' Life magazine. We were there at the beginning (I'm still there; ) for fifteen years, until Kelly was called to other opportunities.

One thing I can attest, Kelly's artistic abilities are truly exceptional. In addition to the straight-up, awesome-scavenger hunts, the book is packed with crafts and recipes that are adaptable for DIY lovers, like myself, for birthday parties, youth group, or impromptu!
